Today, based on UN statistics 55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. At present 35% of the urban population around the world are living in urban slums that lack necessities of life.
Pakistan has a population of nearly 216 million, and the population living in slums is reported at 45.5% and rising according to the World Bank sources. Around 32% are under the age of 15 years and in major cities a rough estimate shows that there are between 1.2 to 1.5 million children roaming the streets. These children are denied basic rights such as access to basic education, healthcare or shelter and therefore become an easy target to various kinds of exploitation.
